Lightsabers glowed. Stormtroopers posed for selfies. And the New York Islanders delivered a last-minute thriller.
On Sunday, March 1, UBS Arena transformed into a galaxy far, far away as the Islanders hosted Star Wars Night during their 5–4 win over the Florida Panthers. While the dramatic finish kept fans on the edge of their seats, much of the buzz in the concourse belonged to the armor-clad members of the 501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison.
From 5 p.m. through puck drop and beyond, troopers, Sith Lords, and Imperial officers fanned out across UBS Arena at 2400 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, greeting fans and posing for photos in meticulously screen-accurate costumes.

Not Just Costumes. A Mission.
The 501st Legion is the world’s largest Star Wars costuming organization, known for its movie-accurate portrayals of characters from the Dark Side. But it’s not just about looking good in white plastoid armor. The volunteer-run group supports charities and community events and cons, bringing fandom to life while raising funds and awareness.
On Long Island, the Empire City Garrison has become a familiar presence at conventions, charity walks, hospital visits, and special events. Their partnership with the Islanders for Star Wars Night is now a fan-favorite tradition.
“Getting to do the Islanders is always an amazing experience,” said Chris Freehan of the 501st Empire City Garrison in a statement to SciFiSland. “The fans are really into it and we get to interact with them at various areas around the arena.”
And interact they did.
Throughout the evening, fans lined up for photos with Darth Vader, Imperial pilots, and rows of stormtroopers standing at attention.
Hockey With a Dramatic Flair
As for the game itself, the Islanders delivered a performance worthy of a cinematic finale.
Captain Anders Lee broke a 4–4 tie with just 31.8 seconds remaining, sealing a 5–4 victory and extending the Islanders’ win streak to five games. Rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer recorded his first three-point night with two goals and an assist, becoming just the second defenseman in franchise history to score 20 goals in a season, joining Islanders legend Denis Potvin.
Bo Horvat and Carson Soucy added goals, while goaltender David Rittich made 29 saves in the win.
The Islanders improved to 75 points, keeping pace in a tight playoff race as the regular season pushes forward.
“It’s a big two points for us,” Lee said after the game. “We’re putting our push on.”

Where Fandom and Long Island Collide
Star Wars Night may officially live on the NHL calendar as a themed game, but on Long Island it feels bigger than that. It’s a collision of pop culture and hometown pride. Hockey jerseys meet Jedi robes. The Force meets the forecheck.
For the 501st Empire City Garrison, it’s another opportunity to connect.
And for fans walking into UBS Arena Sunday night, it wasn’t just a game. It was a full immersive experience, complete with blasters, bounty hunters, and a dramatic final act.
On Long Island, even hockey can feel like a space opera.
