A 60-year-old Sayville woman was left seriously injured on the side of the road after a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning, according to Suffolk County Police.
Police said Michele Walters was jogging on Brook Street west of Cherry Avenue in Sayville at approximately 5:30 a.m. on May 16 when she was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 5:44 a.m. reporting an injured woman lying on the roadside. Walters was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore with serious injuries.
In the days following the crash, Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit and Fifth Squad detectives launched an investigation into the hit-and-run.
Police had initially described the suspect vehicle as a dark-colored SUV that may have sustained front-end or front passenger-side damage and released an image of a vehicle seen on Brook Street.
On Tuesday morning, Fifth Precinct officers arrested Heather Foster, 50, on Cherry Avenue in Sayville. Detectives also executed a search warrant at Foster’s home on Lorraine Circle in West Sayville, where they seized evidence including a 2021 Mazda CX-5 that police said was involved in the crash.
Foster was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Physical Injury. She was scheduled to be arraigned May 20 at First District Court in Central Islip.
Police noted that criminal charges are accusations and that Foster is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
