Rocky Point Man Arrested in Illegal Speed Contest in Centereach

A Rocky Point man was arrested Tuesday night for participating in an illegal speed contest in a Centereach parking lot last month, according to Suffolk County Police.

Members of the Suffolk County Police Street Takeover Task Force observed a 2019 Dodge Challenger being driven recklessly in the parking lot of 2112 Middle Country Road on the evening of November 29. Police said the vehicle was seen spinning its tires, creating friction and smoke, before fleeing the scene.

Following an investigation by Sixth Precinct Investigative Unit officers, Kelvin Torresurquilla, 20, was identified as the driver. He was arrested Tuesday at the Sixth Precinct and charged with Unlawful Speed Contest.

Torresurquilla was released on a Field Appearance Ticket and is scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date. Police said the vehicle involved in the incident was seized as part of the investigation.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
