North Merrick Man Arrested for East Meadow Smoke Shop Burglary

A North Merrick man was arrested early Sunday morning after police say he was caught inside an East Meadow convenience store during a burglary in progress.

According to Nassau County police, First Squad officers responded to a report of a break-in at Convenience and Smoke Shop, located at 2050 Hempstead Turnpike, at approximately 1:40 a.m. on February 22.

When officers arrived, they observed that the store’s front glass had been shattered. Police said they found the suspect inside the business and took him into custody without incident.

Antonios Kanakis, 35, of 1878 Wilson Avenue in North Merrick, was charged with Burglary in the Third Degree and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on February 22 at First District Court in Hempstead.

The charges are accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
