MANHASSET, N.Y. — A Queens mother and daughter were arrested Saturday after an alleged shoplifting attempt at a Macy’s in Manhasset escalated into a violent confrontation that left a store employee injured, according to Nassau County police.
Police said Diane Butrico, 60, and Jaclyn Grillo, 21, both of Astoria, entered the Macy’s at 1100 Northern Boulevard on April 18 at approximately 3:13 p.m. The two allegedly selected merchandise, concealed the items in a reusable bag, and attempted to walk out without paying.
Store security stopped them near the exit, authorities said.
During the confrontation, Grillo allegedly threatened a loss prevention employee and shoved him to the ground, injuring his arm. Both women were taken into custody at the scene.
Grillo is charged with second-degree robbery and assault on a retail worker, a violent felony offense under New York law. Butrico is charged with fourth-degree criminal facilitation and petit larceny.
Grillo was scheduled to be arraigned April 19 at First District Court in Hempstead. Butrico was issued a desk appearance ticket and is due back in court on April 29.
If convicted, Grillo faces the possibility of significant prison time due to the felony robbery charge.
The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
