A 20-year-old Levittown man was charged with driving while intoxicated after a single-vehicle crash in West Babylon seriously injured his 18-year-old passenger early Saturday morning, Suffolk County police said.
Jairon Velasquez was driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz at a high rate of speed eastbound from 17th Street and crossing Straight Path when the vehicle struck a curb and crashed into a utility pole at about 3:49 a.m. Oct. 24, police said.
His passenger, Diana Romero, 18, of Deer Park, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Velasquez, of Levittown, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip. Police said the Mercedes-Benz was impounded for a safety check.
First Squad detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 631-854-8152.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
