UPDATE: The previously unidentified man who disappeared from view in the ocean at Robert Moses State Park on Saturday has been located alive and well, New York State Police said Sunday.
State Police and New York State Park Police said the man contacted authorities after widespread news coverage and the sharing of information by members of the media and public.
Investigators subsequently confirmed that he was the same person who had been seen entering the ocean near Field 3 at Robert Moses State Park on Sept. 26.
As LI True Crime originally reported Saturday, police sought the public’s help after a man wearing dark-colored shorts was seen in the ocean at approximately 2:30 p.m. and then disappeared from view.
Police said at the time that the man had not been seen exiting the water and investigators did not know his identity, prompting concerns about his whereabouts and a request for information from anyone who might know him.
Police said Sunday that the man has now been located alive and well and no further assistance from the public is needed.
New York State Police and New York State Park Police thanked members of the news media and the public for helping investigators identify and locate him.
