Nine people were arrested and 12 vehicles were impounded after police responded to a street takeover that effectively shut down Central Avenue late Friday night.
Suffolk County police said the department’s Street Takeover Task Force learned through intelligence gathering and social media monitoring that a takeover was planned in the Plainview-East Farmingdale area for 11:30 p.m. on July 17.
At approximately 11:40 p.m., numerous vehicles were blocking Central Avenue as drivers allegedly operated recklessly, performed stunts and did donuts and burnouts in the roadway, police said.
Task force members responded and arrested nine people. Police also impounded 12 vehicles and issued 46 traffic tickets for various infractions.
The following people were charged with unlawful speed contest, a misdemeanor:
- Logan Woodwiss, 23, of Merrick
- Devanny Alvarezcanela, 20, of Merrick
- Christopher Sosa, 31, of Corona
- Joseph Miller, 18, of Deer Park
- Davon Chavesmariano, 26, of Brentwood
- Justin Jadunandan, 20, of Jamaica
- Dale Richardson, 30, of Uniondale
- Maher Jaghab, 21, of Merrick
- Brian Fortune, 22, of West Islip
They are scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
A criminal charge is an accusation. The defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
