A Central Islip man was arrested after police said the truck he was driving struck a 2-year-old boy and the toddler’s mother in Farmingdale Wednesday afternoon before continuing from the scene.
Elvin Majano Diaz, 27, was charged with leaving the scene of an incident with injury following the Aug. 12 crash, according to police.
Detectives said the incident happened at about 3:51 p.m. near 416 Conklin Street.
The toddler unexpectedly ran into the roadway and his 28-year-old mother attempted to retrieve him, police said. A 1998 Peterbilt traveling east on Conklin Street then struck both the boy and his mother before continuing eastbound.
The child suffered an abrasion to his leg, while his mother suffered injuries to her hip and legs. Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Police said an investigation led detectives to Diaz, who lives on Palm Street in Central Islip, and he was arrested.
The Peterbilt was impounded for a brake and safety check.
Diaz was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear Aug. 21 at First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
