A 66-year-old Flanders man was arrested after allegedly refusing to exit his vehicle during a traffic stop and speeding away from a Southampton Town police officer Sunday night, authorities said.

Wilfredo Bassat, of Flanders, was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, obstructing governmental administration and reckless driving following the Nov. 1 incident.

According to Southampton Town police, an officer stopped a 2006 Hyundai sedan near the 7-Eleven at 721 Flanders Road at approximately 10:48 p.m.

Police said Bassat refused the officer’s instructions to exit the vehicle and instead drove away onto Flanders Road.

Officers later located the Hyundai at a residence on Brookhaven Avenue in Flanders, where Bassat surrendered to police.

Bassat was charged with third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, reckless driving and several traffic violations.

He was released on a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Southampton Town Justice Court. Police did not provide a court date.
