A 26-year-old Bethpage man registered as a Level 1 sex offender was arrested following an investigation into alleged indecent material involving minors, Nassau County police said.
Steven Klauer was arrested at his Bethpage residence without incident at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to the Nassau County Police Department’s Special Victims Squad.
Police said the investigation began after Klauer reported to the Nassau County Probation Office in Mineola on July 7 as required by his sex offender registration status.
During that visit, probation officers recovered a phone belonging to Klauer that they believed had been used for sexual purposes, police said.
An investigation conducted with assistance from the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force led to Klauer’s arrest three months later, according to police.
Klauer is charged with four counts of first-degree disseminating indecent material to minors, six counts of second-degree disseminating indecent material to minors, four counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child younger than 17 and four counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child younger than 16.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 6 at First District Court in Hempstead.
