A Copiague man is facing a felony driving while intoxicated charge after Suffolk County police said he crashed into a patrol car Thursday night, injuring himself and an officer.
Julio Zelaya, 39, was driving a 2004 Acura TL east on Montauk Highway in Copiague at about 9:46 p.m. on Aug. 27 when police said he attempted to turn left onto Hawkins Boulevard.
Police said Zelaya turned in front of a patrol car traveling west on Montauk Highway and the two vehicles collided.
Suffolk County Police Officer Jordan Tozitsky, 32, and Zelaya were both taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with injuries police described as non-life-threatening.
Zelaya was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction for a designated offense within 10 years, a Class E felony.
New York State court records list the same charge as the top charge in the case and show the incident and arrest occurred Aug. 27.
Zelaya was scheduled to appear for arraignment in Suffolk County First District Court on Saturday, Aug. 29, before Judge Pierce F. Cohalan. Court records list the outcome of that appearance as “No Show – No Action.”
No defense attorney was listed in the court record as of Saturday.
