A 27-year-old Westbury man was shot in the jaw by Nassau County police after authorities said he repeatedly stabbed and shattered the window of an officers’ vehicle Monday night.
The police-involved shooting occurred at 11:01 p.m. on Brush Hollow Road near Second Street, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
Police said Bureau of Special Operations officers were sitting inside their vehicle when Adrian Thompson, of Bard Road, ran toward the front passenger-side window.
Thompson allegedly stabbed the window several times with a knife, shattering the glass, detectives said.
The officers discharged their weapons, striking Thompson in the jaw. Police said the officers immediately began rendering aid and providing lifesaving assistance.
Thompson was arrested and taken to a hospital, where police said he was in stable condition.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said during a Tuesday briefing that police had received two calls about a man allegedly acting irrationally and attempting to stab people with a knife.
Ryder said Thompson ran from behind bushes in a wooded area before striking the side of the police vehicle. One officer fired twice but did not strike him, Ryder said. A second officer then fired one shot as Thompson moved behind the vehicle, with the bullet passing through one side of his face and out the other.
Thompson was taken to Nassau University Medical Center. Ryder said doctors expected him to recover.
Police displayed photographs of the knife recovered at the scene during the briefing.
Police said Thompson had a previous interaction with officers on April 13. WABC reported that investigators said he was allegedly acting irrationally and may have been inhaling glue during that encounter.
Thompson is charged with two counts of menacing a police officer. Police said additional charges were still being considered.
He was scheduled for a bedside arraignment Tuesday at the hospital.
The Homicide Squad is continuing to investigate the shooting.
