A Mastic man has been indicted after prosecutors said he stabbed a 71-year-old driver in the neck during a road rage confrontation in Mastic last month.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced that Jeremiah Giraud, 25, of Mastic, was arraigned Thursday on charges including two counts of Assault in the Second Degree and one count of Assault in the Third Degree.
According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on May 19, 2026, at approximately 9:07 a.m. at the intersection of Ditmas Avenue and Riviera Drive.
Authorities said a 71-year-old driver was stopped at a stop sign when a Nissan Murano pulled up behind his vehicle. The driver of the Murano allegedly honked at the victim, who honked back. Prosecutors said the victim then made a U-turn while the Murano turned onto Riviera Drive before returning to Ditmas Avenue and honking again.
Both the victim and Giraud, who prosecutors said was a passenger in the Nissan Murano, got out of their vehicles and briefly interacted before Giraud allegedly stabbed the victim in the back of the neck with a knife. Prosecutors allege Giraud then got back into the Murano, which left the scene.
The victim called 911 and was taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Patchogue for treatment of his injury.
Investigators later arrested Giraud in Mastic. Law enforcement also recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack from the Nissan Murano, according to prosecutors.
At his arraignment on June 25, Acting Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski ordered Giraud held on $50,000 cash, $100,000 bond, or a $500,000 partially secured bond while the case is pending. If convicted of the top charge, he faces up to 2⅓ to 7 years in prison.
Giraud is scheduled to return to court on July 20, 2026. Prosecutors noted that the charges are accusations and that he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
