Mastic Man Convicted of Strangling 8-Month-Old Infant, Faces Up to 7 Years in Prison

A Mastic man has been convicted of strangling and injuring an 8-month-old infant after a Suffolk County jury found him guilty following a trial in Suffolk County Supreme Court.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney announced June 23 that Amar Corbin, 25, was found guilty of Strangulation in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Prosecutors said Corbin injured the infant by applying pressure to the child’s face and chest.

According to evidence presented at trial, the child was left in Corbin’s care overnight on May 13, 2025. Prosecutors said Corbin spent the night drinking and became increasingly agitated while arguing with his then-girlfriend over the phone.

The following morning, the child’s mother arrived at Corbin’s apartment and found the baby in a portable crib next to the couch where Corbin was sleeping. She noticed injuries to the infant’s face and chest and took the child to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment and evaluation.

When questioned about the injuries, Corbin allegedly gave multiple explanations, including claims that the injuries were self-inflicted, had been present for days, or were caused by a rash.

Medical experts testified that the infant was examined by a forensic nurse and a child abuse pediatrician, who determined the injuries were caused by blunt-force pressure to the face and chest. The child suffered bruising on the cheeks consistent with a handprint, as well as broken blood vessels on the face and upper body. Experts testified that the blood vessels ruptured due to the force applied to the child.

“Anyone who would harm an innocent child should not remain free in our community,” Tierney said. “I thank the jury for their careful attention in this case, as well as our prosecutors who work tirelessly to be a voice for victims.”

The verdict was returned June 22 before Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Timothy P. Mazzei. Corbin was convicted of Strangulation in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony; Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony; and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A misdemeanor.

Corbin is scheduled to be sentenced on July 28, 2026. He faces up to seven years in prison.
