An 18-year-old Brooklyn man has been arraigned as the second defendant charged in a fatal shooting that killed a 7-month-old baby and wounded her toddler brother in East Williamsburg earlier this month.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Mathew Rodriguez, 18, was arraigned Tuesday in Brooklyn Supreme Court on an indictment charging him with multiple counts of second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, and weapons offenses. He was ordered held without bail and is due back in court on June 10, 2026.
Rodriguez is the second defendant charged in the case. His co-defendant, Amuri Greene, 21, was arrested on April 1 and is facing charges including murder, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and assault. Greene is expected to appear in court Wednesday.
According to the investigation, the shooting happened on April 1 at approximately 1:15 p.m. near Humboldt Street and Moore Street in East Williamsburg. Prosecutors allege the two men were riding a moped, with Rodriguez driving and Greene as a passenger.
Police say Greene fired multiple rounds into a group of people gathered on the street.
A 7-month-old girl, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was seated in a stroller when she was struck in the head and killed. Her 2-year-old brother, who was also in the stroller, was grazed in the back and survived.
Authorities said Rodriguez drove the moped away from the scene following the shooting. The vehicle later crashed into another car while traveling the wrong way down a one-way street a few blocks away. Greene was taken into custody shortly after the crash, while Rodriguez was later arrested in Pennsylvania.
In addition to the murder charges, Rodriguez faces counts including second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, tampering with physical evidence, and hindering prosecution.
District Attorney Gonzalez described the shooting as a senseless act of violence that took the life of an infant and injured another young child.
The case is being prosecuted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office Homicide Bureau.
Rodriguez remains in custody. The charges are accusations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
