8-Year-Old Drives Car, Strikes and Seriously Injures Grandmother in Lindenhurst

A 63-year-old woman was seriously injured Monday after her 8-year-old grandson started her parked Honda and the vehicle began rolling down a Lindenhurst driveway, Suffolk County police said.

The incident happened at approximately 10 a.m. on July 13, according to police.

The child entered his grandmother’s 2016 Honda and pushed the vehicle’s start button. Gina Bente noticed the Honda moving down the driveway and attempted to get inside to stop it.

The driver’s-side door struck Bente, causing her to fall and hit her head on the pavement, police said.

The Honda continued moving until it struck a curb and stopped in the middle of the road.

Bente was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip in serious condition. The child was not injured.

Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating the crash.
