A 19-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured after police said he tried to bypass traffic at a high rate of speed on the shoulder of Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station and collided with two cars Thursday night.
John Hoffman, of Port Jefferson Station, was riding a 2022 Honda motorcycle westbound near Jayne Boulevard at about 8:09 p.m. Sept. 3 when he traveled onto the right shoulder to pass traffic, Suffolk County police said.
Police said Hoffman’s motorcycle struck a 2020 Chevrolet Camaro that was turning right into a parking lot at 5184 Nesconset Highway.
The impact ejected Hoffman from the motorcycle, sending him over the hood of the Camaro before he struck a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu that was exiting the parking lot to travel west on Nesconset Highway, police said.
Hoffman was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.
The Camaro driver, Sean Jackson, 39, of Port Jefferson, and the Malibu driver, Juan Miguitama, 69, of Coram, were not injured.
All three vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 631-854-8652.
