Suffolk County Police have issued a correction to their account of a fatal Rocky Point crash, now saying the driver of a Jeep veered into the opposite lane before the collision that killed a Middle Island man.
Police originally reported that David Maiman, 44, was driving a 2020 Lexus northbound on Rocky Point Yaphank Road when his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck a Jeep.
In a correction issued Oct. 5, police reversed that account.
Police now say Ferdi Reyes Garcia, 45, of Port Jefferson, was driving a 2020 Jeep when the Jeep veered into the northbound lane and struck Maiman’s Lexus.
The crash happened Sept. 9 at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Rocky Point Yaphank Road in Rocky Point.
Maiman was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Reyes Garcia was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries, police said.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 631-852-8752.
