New York State Police have identified a 70-year-old Kings Park man who died in the second of two fatal crashes at the Sunken Meadow State Park toll plaza in September.
Police identified the man as Gregory Salone, who was killed on Sept. 21 when his vehicle struck the toll booth area at the northern end of the Sunken Meadow State Parkway in Smithtown and caught fire.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 1:04 p.m. and found one person dead inside the vehicle.
State Police said the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
The crash occurred exactly one week after another driver was killed in a similar incident at the same toll plaza.
In that earlier crash, on Sept. 14, a vehicle struck the toll booth area and became engulfed in flames. State Police subsequently identified the driver as Vijay P. Cheema, 74, of Fort Salonga, and determined that his death was a suicide.
The latest update concerns Salone and the Sept. 21 crash. Police have not announced a determination about what caused that incident.
Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the Sept. 21 crash, along with the New York State Park Police, Kings Park Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department.
The investigation remains ongoing.
