Elderly Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Copiague Crash; Driver Charged

A Copiague man was arrested Wednesday morning after police say he struck and seriously injured an 85-year-old pedestrian while driving with a revoked license.

According to Suffolk County Police, the crash occurred at about 7:36 a.m. at the intersection of Montauk Highway and South Strong Avenue in Copiague. Authorities said Frederick Finger, 74, was driving a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander and attempting to make a left turn onto eastbound Montauk Highway when his vehicle hit a pedestrian crossing the roadway.

The victim, identified as Rose Marie Schementi, 85, of Lindenhurst, was crossing Montauk Highway from south to north at the time of the collision. She was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where she was admitted with serious injuries.

Finger was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor offense that applies when a person operates a vehicle while their license is suspended or revoked. He was issued a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Detectives with the Suffolk County Police First Squad are continuing the investigation and are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact them at 631-854-8152.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
