East Meadow laundromat burglary arrest ends with 2 Nassau officers injured

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Two Nassau County police officers were injured after a man arrested in connection with a burglary at an East Meadow laundromat became violent at a hospital, police said.

Michael Torres, 34, who police described as undomiciled, entered Rapid 2 Laundromat at 2295 Hempstead Turnpike at about 10:35 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, according to Nassau County police.

Detectives allege Torres forcibly pushed a 34-year-old employee into an employees-only vestibule before taking two bottles of soap and attempting to leave.

Third Precinct officers arrested Torres without incident, police said.

Torres was later taken by a Nassau police ambulance to a hospital for evaluation. Police allege he became violent and combative at the hospital, kicking and flailing his arms and legs and injuring two officers.

Both officers were treated at the scene.

Torres was charged with third-degree burglary and two counts of second-degree assault. He was scheduled for arraignment Monday, Sept. 21, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
