Where can you go to watch Jawas disco with Stormtroopers, discover not one, not two, but three times machines, pick up that latest Funko, and get your retro 80s fix with the star of Night of the Comet and The Last Starfighter all while raising money for a great cause? That was at Levittown Hall in Hicksville on Saturday when Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County hosted its 4th Annual Sci-Fi Mini Convention.
The annual event also raised the roof with members from the 501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison, Rebel Legion’s Echo Base, and Saber Guild’s Endor Temple in Star Wars costume, along with other local cosplayers like the Long Island Ghost Busters, Angel_TA2, and mcheretic / Abigail. There were raffles and prizes, vendors, and celebrity guests like Michael C. Williams from The Blair Witch Project and Catherine Mary Stewart from The Last Starfighter and cult classic, Night of the Comet. Star Trek novelist and comic book author Michael Jan Friedman was there as well as artist and author, Gina Falke. That’s not where the fun ended: the DJ spun tunes, a comedian did a bit in a Marty McFly outfit, and there was a celebrity guest panel on stage.
Celebrity panel included, Catherine Mary Stewart, Damian Maffei, and Michael C. Williams.
Chris Feehan, development assistant at the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, said that last year’s con was a record-breaker, raising over $6,000 in five hours. We’re waiting to see the total take on the 2025 con.
The party went from noon until 5pm. The event is free and a lot is packed into a small package, providing Long Island geeks with a little mid-summer gathering between other cons.
