A Sound Beach husband and wife have been charged with animal cruelty after investigators said their dog was severely underweight and had been kept confined to a crate without adequate food, water or veterinary care.

Michael O’Brien, 39, and Jenecia O’Brien, 37, each face two misdemeanor counts under New York’s Agriculture and Markets Law following an investigation by the Suffolk County SPCA.

According to investigators, the couple’s 5-year-old dog, Kobe, a Coonhound-Boxer mix, weighed approximately 37 pounds when examined, significantly below the expected weight of 65 to 67 pounds.

Investigators also reported finding lesions on the dog’s body consistent with prolonged pressure or confinement.

Authorities alleged that the couple failed to provide Kobe with adequate nutrition, water and necessary veterinary treatment while keeping the dog confined to a crate.

Both O’Briens were issued appearance tickets on Oct. 12 and are scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 30 in Central Islip.

Kobe is currently receiving treatment at an animal shelter, according to the Suffolk County SPCA.
