A 43-year-old Freeport woman was arrested Friday night after police said she was driving while intoxicated with her 10-year-old daughter in the car.
Zaneta Lachapelle was arrested at approximately 10:10 p.m. Oct. 9 following a traffic stop near North Grove Street and Lena Avenue in Freeport, police said.
According to police, Lachapelle was driving a 2015 Nissan with her daughter inside when officers conducted a traffic stop and observed signs of intoxication.
Lachapelle was arrested without incident, and her daughter was released into the care of a family friend.
Lachapelle was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, a felony, along with misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child.
Court records show she was also charged with making an improper right turn and violating a state law concerning alcohol or cannabis in a motor vehicle on a highway.
Leandra’s Law makes it a felony in New York to drive while intoxicated with a child younger than 16 in the vehicle.
Lachapelle pleaded not guilty at her arraignment Saturday, Oct. 10, before Judge Ryan E. Cronin in Nassau District Court, according to New York State Unified Court System records.
She was released on her own recognizance, meaning she was not required to post bail. The court also issued a temporary order of protection.
Lachapelle is represented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 4 at 9 a.m. before Judge Joseph B. Girardi in Nassau District Court.
