A Copiague family was rescued by Suffolk County police early Sunday after their boat ran aground in the Fire Island Inlet, leaving a 2-year-old boy with minor injuries.
The family was aboard a 25-foot Parker boat that ran aground because of low tide Saturday night near the mouth of the inlet in Babylon, according to Suffolk County police.
On board were a 30-year-old man, his 30-year-old wife, their 2-year-old son and the child’s 62-year-old grandfather.
The boy’s mother called 911 from her cellphone at 11:22 p.m. after the boat became stranded.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau Officers Keith Miller and Robert King responded aboard Marine Juliet but could not get within a half-mile of the boat.
Officers Rob Jenkins and James Matriciano then transported Marine Hovercraft Tango to Oak Beach and deployed the vessel.
The hovercraft was able to reach the stranded boat, and officers began removing the family at 1:52 a.m. Sunday.
Police brought the family to the New York State Boat Basin.
The 2-year-old was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of minor injuries, police said. No other family members were injured.
