Home Health Aide Accused Identity Theft in $138K Scheme

A home health aide is accused of using a client’s identity to open five credit card accounts and finance a car, resulting in more than $138,000 in unauthorized charges, Nassau County police said.

Doris Chou, 56, of Oakland Gardens, surrendered to detectives Friday, Aug. 21, in connection with an identity theft investigation in Garden City Park.

Police said Chou worked as a home health aide for a woman who was 69 years old at the time of the alleged crimes.

Between Nov. 17, 2023, and Nov. 21, 2024, Chou allegedly used the woman’s identity without her knowledge or permission to open five credit card accounts and obtain financing for a car, according to detectives.

The unauthorized charges totaled more than $138,000, police said.

The alleged identity theft was reported to police on July 21, 2025. Following an investigation by the Nassau County Police Department’s Electronics Squad Fraud and Forgery Section, Chou surrendered without incident on Aug. 21, 2026.

Chou was charged with six counts of first-degree identity theft, second-degree grand larceny and third-degree grand larceny.

She was scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
