Wyandanch Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Shooting Victim Outside Jake’s 58 Casino

A Wyandanch man will spend the next decade behind bars for shooting a man twice outside Jake’s 58 Casino in Islandia, Suffolk County prosecutors announced Monday.

Nashawn J. Legros, 26, was sentenced June 8 to 10 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

According to court documents and Legros’ admissions during his guilty plea, the shooting occurred on May 31, 2024, at approximately 10:16 p.m. The victim was walking through the parking lot toward Jake’s 58 Casino when Legros fired two shots directly at him, striking him twice.

Despite being wounded, the victim was able to get inside the casino with assistance before collapsing. Prosecutors said Legros fled the scene in a vehicle that was later abandoned in Central Islip.

The victim suffered severe injuries. One bullet entered his chest and traveled through his body, damaging multiple organs, including his intestines, colon and diaphragm. Surgeons used more than 40 staples to repair the injuries. Additional procedures were required to remove fluid around his heart and lungs, and one bullet remains lodged in his pelvic bone.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime.

“This brazen act of violence has no place in Suffolk County,” Tierney said. “My office is committed to holding violent offenders accountable. That message should be clear from this sentence as the defendant will now spend a decade in prison for this violent attack in a public place.”

Legros pleaded guilty before Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro on Feb. 25, 2026. The case was investigated by Suffolk County Police Department Fourth Squad detectives and District Attorney’s Office detective investigators.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Melissa Turk of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Bureau.
