A Bellport man who was released from prison in March has been charged with murdering his girlfriend during a violent stabbing attack outside a Yaphank gas station Saturday morning, according to Suffolk County police and court records.
Michael McHenry, 40, was arrested Saturday night and charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Juliann Bachmann, 30, a Bellport mother of three and home-health aide.
Police said Bachmann was found injured and unresponsive at about 7:25 a.m. Saturday at the Speedway gas station located at 80A Horseblock Road in Yaphank. She was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue, where she was pronounced dead.
According to prosecutors, McHenry allegedly stabbed Bachmann multiple times in the neck and chest during an attack that unfolded in and around her vehicle while witnesses watched in horror and called 911.
Authorities allege McHenry dragged Bachmann from the car during the assault before fleeing the scene ahead of police arrival.
McHenry was arrested later Saturday at approximately 8:13 p.m., police said.
Court records show McHenry had been paroled in March after serving prison time stemming from a 2024 attempted assault conviction. Prosecutors said he and Bachmann were involved in a relationship.
McHenry was arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip, where a judge ordered him held without bail on the murder charge.
Friends and relatives gathered Sunday evening at the Speedway gas station for a vigil honoring Bachmann, who family members described as deeply devoted to her children and loved by those around her.
Police have not released a motive in the killing.
A criminal charge is an accusation. McHenry is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
