A driver was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after leading police on a chase from Port Washington to the Americana Manhasset shopping center, where the pursuit ended following multiple vehicle crashes, authorities said.
According to Nassau County police, the incident began around 12:30 p.m. when a Port Washington police officer attempted a traffic stop near Main Street in Port Washington. Police said the driver fled, triggering a pursuit through several Nassau County communities.
“Port Washington police officer was conducting a vehicle traffic stop of an individual when the fled the scene causing multiple vehicle accidents,” a police official said during a Wednesday press conference.

Authorities said the pursuit lasted roughly 30 minutes before ending near the luxury shopping center on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset.
Multiple crashes were reported during the pursuit, though officials said no injuries were reported.
Northern Boulevard was shut down for hours between Searingtown Road and The Gate at Manhasset shopping center while police investigated the scene. Nassau County police said the roadway reopened around 9 p.m.
Police officials said officers were securing four separate crime scenes connected to the incident.
Witnesses near Americana Manhasset reported seeing officers running through the parking lot and hearing what sounded like a gunshot as a helicopter circled overhead. Some witnesses also reported hearing officers ordering someone to get on the ground.
Police have not confirmed whether a gunshot was fired or whether any weapon was involved.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person taken into custody or announced any charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
