A jury has convicted Guy Rivera of aggravated manslaughter in the killing of Jonathan Diller, a Massapequa Park native — but cleared him of the top charge of first-degree murder, according to the Daily News.
When the verdict was first read, one juror broke ranks during polling, forcing the judge to send the panel back for further deliberations before they ultimately confirmed the decision.
Prosecutors said Rivera pulled a .380-caliber handgun during a March 25, 2024 stop on Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway and fired, striking Diller in the abdomen. The 31-year-old officer later died at Jamaica Hospital after massive blood loss.
The jury also convicted Rivera of attempted murder of an officer and multiple weapon charges. His defense argued the gun discharged during a struggle, but jurors ultimately found him criminally responsible.
Rivera now faces up to 90 years to life in prison. Newsday also has the full story.
