Fourth annual event raises funds for the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County.
The force, and a whole lot of fandom, is heading to Hicksville this summer as the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County hosts its fourth annual Sci-Fi Mini-Con on Saturday, July 19, from noon to 5 p.m. at Levittown Hall, 201 Levittown Parkway.
Admission is free, but the experience is rich: celebrity guests, movie cars, live cosplay demonstrations, raffles, and activities for fans of all ages. Sponsored by Jovia Financial Credit Union, the event blends the energy of a fan convention with the heart of a community fundraiser.
“We’re putting together a fantastic show,” said Chris Feehan, development assistant at CP Nassau and charity officer for the 501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison. “This is a true community event with individuals with similar interests coming together to have some fun for a good cause.”
Celebrity appearances and fan favorites
This year’s guest lineup includes a mix of sci-fi icons, horror legends and local favorites. Scheduled to appear are:
-
Michael C. Williams, known for The Blair Witch Project, Altered, and Ghost Game
-
Damian Maffei, featured in The Strangers: Prey at Night, Haunt, and Black Eyed Susan, and the voice of Pretty Boy Johnny in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game
-
Catherine Mary Stewart, star of The Last Starfighter and Night of the Comet (confirmation pending)
-
Joe Zaso, actor and horror author, seen in Virus X and The Wolf of Wall Street
-
Brimstone, wrestler, actor and host of Grindhouse Radio
-
Michael Jan Friedman, a prolific Star Trek novelist and comic book writer
-
Robin Channing, a magician known for his mind-bending performances
-
Gina Falke, artist and author of Second Chances and Princess Djina of Rasnov Romania
Feehan said the event team was “beyond excited” to land some of these names.
“Michael [Williams] is a horror legend, being in one of the most memorable horror movies ever, The Blair Witch Project, and Damian actually grew up in Levittown, so this is a sort of hometown reunion for him,” he said.
Star Wars cosplay, Ghostbusters, and movie cars
One of the biggest draws at Sci-Fi Mini-Con is the immersive experience created by fan groups who donate their time—and their costumes—to support CP Nassau. Among the groups scheduled to appear are:
-
501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison
-
Rebel Legion’s Echo Base
-
Saber Guild’s Endor Temple
-
Long Island Ghostbusters
Activities throughout the day include Blast-A-Trooper, Jedi Training, photo ops, raffles, auctions, and more. Also on site, weather permitting, will be the Batmobile and DeLorean Time Machine for fans looking for Instagram-worthy moments.
“From Blast-A-Trooper, Jedi Training, and photo opportunities, these groups are the heart of what makes this such an exciting event,” Feehan said. “They have all donated their time and talents to help make this a success for CP Nassau.”
Cosplayers, collectibles and giveaways at Sci-Fi Mini-Con
The day wouldn’t be complete without some fan-favorite cosplayers in attendance. Among those appearing are Angel_TA2, Jacobella Luongo, Abigail (@mcheretic), and Ruby Rinekso. Vendor booths, food, and beverages will be available on site, with proceeds supporting CP Nassau’s mission.
Two major giveaways will also headline the fundraising effort: a HasLabs full-size proton pack and wand, courtesy of the Long Island Ghostbusters, and a 7-foot Darth Vader animated statue with the 501st Legion. Entries will be accepted both onsite and online through donation links.
A mission that’s personal
For Feehan, who has been active with the 501st Legion for 17 years and working at CP Nassau for the past six, the Mini-Con is more than just an event.
“It’s the perfect marriage between my efforts with the 501st and my work at CP Nassau,” he said. “It allows me to channel my fandom passions for a very worthy cause.”
Although admission is free, attendees are encouraged to support the organization by participating in the raffles, giveaways, and on-site fundraising activities. All proceeds benefit the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County and the vital services they provide for children and adults with disabilities.
