Efrosian, librarian, and future hockey mom*. Elena Juatco stepped into Star Trek and immediately created an iconic character on season 5 episode of Discovery titled “Labyrinths.” She is the first female Efrosian seen in the Star Trek universe and the first named of that species, Hy’Rell is the keeper of ancient artifacts in a massive Eternal Gallery and Archive.
We got to sit with Juatco (it’s not pronounced how you think it is) during Trek Long Island for a few minutes to talk about her career, her character, and the bundle of joy she was carrying when she got the role. She told us about the process of becoming Hy’Rell and how that informed her portrayal of the character as well as her maternal instincts kicking in.
“As someone who was pregnant on the show that, really, Hy’Rell really is a mother figure,” Juatco said. ”She is so committed to the preservation of knowledge and passing it on for future generations for life to continue.”
*We also found out that Juatco is a pretty big Canucks fan and, in Canadian form, she’s immersing her young son into the world of ice hockey already! (We’re Rangers fans around here but we gave her a pass because us hockey peeps gotta stick together. LGR!)
