A Queens man was arrested after allegedly selling a stolen 2026 Hyundai Sonata for $18,000 in West Hempstead using a counterfeit title, Nassau County police said.
Kevin A. Perez, 25, was arrested Thursday, Sept. 24, following an investigation by the Nassau County Police Department’s Electronics Squad Fraud and Forgery Section.
Police said a 55-year-old man arranged to meet a seller advertising the Hyundai through social media on July 10. The two agreed on an $18,000 price, and the victim paid cash for the vehicle.
The victim later learned from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles that the vehicle’s title was counterfeit, according to police. Investigators determined the Hyundai had been reported stolen in New York City, and the DMV seized the car.
Police said Perez was identified during the investigation and arrested without incident.
Perez was charged with third-degree grand larceny, second-degree forgery and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Court records show Perez pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Friday, Sept. 25. Bail was set at $2,000 cash, $4,000 insured bond or $10,000 partially secured surety bond.
His next appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, in Nassau District Court.
