A 32-year-old Inwood man is facing a first-degree robbery charge after Nassau County police said he pulled a knife on a man during an early-morning encounter in North Lawrence and fled with the victim’s cellphone.
Edwin Alvarado, 32, was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 11, following an investigation by Nassau County police’s Fourth Squad.
Detectives said Alvarado approached a 25-year-old man near Rockaway Turnpike and Pearsall Avenue at about 2:45 a.m. while brandishing a knife.
Police allege Alvarado demanded the man’s wallet and cellphone before the two became involved in a brief struggle.
Alvarado then fled in an unknown direction with the victim’s cellphone, according to police. No injuries were reported.
Detectives later located Alvarado and took him into custody.
Alvarado was charged with one count of first-degree robbery. Court records identify the charge as a Class B felony involving forcible theft with a deadly weapon.
He was arraigned Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Nassau District Court, where he pleaded not guilty. A temporary order of protection was issued.
Court records show bail was set at $100,000 cash, $200,000 insured bond or $500,000 partially secured surety bond.
Alvarado is scheduled to return to Nassau District Court in Mineola at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, for an indictment control appearance before Judge Anthony William Paradiso.
